[RP Entry]

Along the crumbling docks of the city sits some nameless, abandoned, equally crumbling warehouse, covered with graffiti and various shades of decay. This is where Funebris brings Lan.

It's dreadfully cold and damp inside, many rooms sectioned off with rotting drywall and piles of rubble, boxes of pulp that was once paperwork, and piles of scrap. One room, up a stairway, overlooks the main floor. The window is yellow and cracked. The room is lined with tattered carpets, fixed to the walls roughly with upholstery staples. The floor is thick with rags. This is a nest. It reeks of slime. It's very warm. The space heaters are probably a fire hazard. This is where he intends to keep her.

He sits in the corner, now, huddled. In order to keep her, he must stay above water, right now, and that's putting a rattling strain on his lungs. This will be all right, though. He has books for her.

[OOC - Powers, etc]

Seven years ago, the terrorist and self-appointed master of the waters near Philligan City known as Funebris began his bloody career. The man is responsible for the poisoning deaths of many university professors, several doctors, and countless dock workers. He has released fear-inducing and otherwise poisonous airborne toxins on the city on numerous occasions.
He manifests several strange, inhuman abilities, of unknown origin. He is able to breathe indefinitely under water, though this appears to have a negative effect on his mental state. He possesses inhuman strength and resistance to damage, and secretes a toxic, green mucus while under water. He can survive indefinitely above water, but the presence of his abilities is reliant on submersion, weakening dramatically the longer he remains on the surface, though stabilizing at a still inhuman level at his weakest. He is vulnerable to heat. It both harms him, and causes him to weaken by way of dehydration. It is unknown at which point Nathan realized he possessed these abilities.
It is rumored that he might possess the ability to transform into some sort of giant eel, but whether this is an actual power, or an illusion created by his toxins is unknown. It's possible that he cannot control this ability.
He is extremely intelligent and is capable of creating numerous toxins and hallucinogens, as well as pheromones able to control some forms of sea life to a limited extent. He is apparently immune, through exposure or design, immune to his own creations, and to the polluted underwater conditions near the city.
He has been captured on several occasions, and held prisoner at St. Jude's Home for the Criminally Insane, which has facilities capable of holding him with some degree of security. This doesn't prevent him from breaking out, however.

[ OOC - Background ]

Twenty years ago, a child estimated to be twelve years old, severely malnourished and presenting facial deformities was found by police and brought to the proper authorities, in Philligan City. The boy spoke a language that remains unidentified, showed no knowledge of any known language, and exhibited signs of moderate to severe isolation. He was assumed to be a feral child having been abandoned after acquiring some degree of language ability, as he quickly learned and began to use English. His social skills were underdeveloped or non-existent, and the doctors assigned to him began work on his rehabilitation immediately.
Along with attempts to teach and integrate the child in normal society, a significant amount of reconstructive work was done on his face and neck. His cleft pallet and the abnormal abscesses along his neck and jaw were repaired. Dental work proved unsuccessful – the child presented abnormal, regenerative tooth-like growths instead of normal dentition.
The child was named Nathan and given the surname "Smith", which he never rejected or acknowledged.
He became a subject of a somewhat well known psychological study on the process of his acclamation into society, and, for the next few years, his progress was remarkable. There were glaring holes in his ability to relate to other people, but he was intelligent, well behaved, and eager to please. When he turned sixteen, his primary doctor and guardian was removed from the project in favor of other interests, namely, conservation of funding. He was essentially abandoned, and relegated to an orphanage, though given some degree of specialized care. He barely managed to avoid being sent to a group home when he reached eighteen, and held onto some degree of independence.
Independence meant learning. He was accepted into Philligan University, with certain allowances for what manifested as severe social anxiety, and began what was largely a directed independent study in the fields of biochemistry and psychology. He excelled academically, and this was considered a success.
He was increasingly involved with eco-activism, perhaps his one social outlet aside from his classes, which lead to an obsession with eco-terrorism. It wasn't much of a leap. The boy had always been obsessed with fear. Something had happened to him. His caretakers never discovered what. He learned quickly enough to stop claiming to have been raised somewhere dark and beneath the water.
He was hired on by the university as a research assistant, but his demeanor and radical views soon saw him dispelled. He considered this a brick wall in the face of pursuing the only work he could ever see himself enjoying or even being able to do, and this is when his life took a turn for the worse.
